Imagine yourself on a night out in a vibrant, ecstatic atmosphere where you're free to dance anyway you like without limitations, to the lush beats of funky music from around the globe.

The Funky Seomra was born at Cultivate in September 2008.  Preceeding the Funky Seomra at Cultivate was Being Human: Meditative Healing Dance that in turn was inspired by Matthew Fox's Techno Cosmic Mass. Cultivate ran Being Human events from 2005 - 2009, integrating the arts, Yoga, mandalas, labyrinths, meditation and other practices with dance at the core of this celebration of humanity and consciousness.  It would later become Kick-Start, the multi-workshop dance-focused event.

Press release from September 2008:

CAN YOU DANCE WITH ABANDON, NATURALLY?

At last! A Saturday night out with a difference.

The opening night of the Funky Seomra in Dublin, September 20th, blew away the expectations of both participants and organisers alike.  Over 150 people blissfully danced the night away in an exciting club atmosphere.  There was an intimate party vibe and the freedom to completely let go and dance without limitations.  That's what The Funky Seomra is all about: a celebration of the pleasure of dancing in an alcohol-free environment, without tedious Sunday morning hangover blues or an overcrowded dance floor.

The Funky Seomra is an Embodiment event held monthly in association with Temple Bar’s Cultivate Centre.  Participants of all ages fill the spacious dance floor or lounge on giant Budda Bags in the chill-out area of the stunning cathedral space of SS Michael and John's in Temple Bar. Funky, very danceable music from many corners of the globe make it irresistible to get your groove on.  Live African drumming, organic and raw chocolate treats, smoothies blended by bicycle power, specialist teas and a Chai Bar are some of the enticing aspects of the event. Upcoming dates include October 18th, November 22nd and December 13th 2008.

David Mooney, director of the event, brings a passion for movement, dance and therapeutic work.  Through his extensive experiences giving ecstatic dance and movement meditation workshops, he knows very well how to create the ambiance that makes the night such a success.  Eleanor, a participant at the opening night, had this to say: “It was the most mesmerisingly amazing night of dance ever!”  Valerie said “It was a beautiful event… so much more than just a dance event.  A place to be and experience connection and warmth. Very valuable. [It is] very exciting that this is possible.”
