An international workshop examining ways of raising food quality standards in hospitals, schools, care-homes by making public food catering, healthier and more ecologically sustainable.

Organised by AlimenTerra, the European association of organic farming organisations and sustainable food systems.

9am        Introduction by Clive Peckham, Director of AlimenTerra.

9.15am   Keynote address by Mr Trevor Sargent TD, Minister for Food and Horticulture, Ireland.

10am      Workshop (see contributors below): Quality ecologically sustainable food supply systems

3pm         Talk by Clive Peckham, Director of AlimentTerra and co-author of  Good Food on the Public Plate.

 
 Workshop Contributors

  Jaque Boutalt, Mayor of the 2nd Arondissement, Paris where 50% of school meals are Organic Appelation Controle.

   Robin Gourlay, Department of Education & Social Services, East Ayreshire, Scotland where childrens school meals are made from locally sourced organic ingredients.

   Paul Winter, Catering Manager, South London & Maudsley, National Health Service Trust. Paul will focus on training of kitchen staff, emphasising the use of organic and local ingredients in a major sustainable catering initiative involving hospitals and schools.

   Loredana Bondi, Director of Educational and Family Services, Ferrara, Italy. The city of Ferrera has a 100% organic school meals program.

  Teresa Fuentes Botargues, is project coordinator for a new organic school project in Catalonia (Menjadors escolars ecologics).

   Maria Carrascosa, Pueblos Blancos Cooperative, Andalucia where the regional government has developed a cooperative food supply chain to schools and hospitals. Maria’s cooperative is one of the main organisers and suppliers for this initiative.

   Maurizio Mariani, President of Risteco, Italy, and winner of European Business & Environment Award 2006. Signor Mariani is a leading expert on sustainable public food systems, recycling and environmentally friendly transport.

   Franco Zecchinato, Chair of El Tamiso Organic Producers Co-operative, Padua, Italy, Signor Zecchinato's cooperative has been the main supplier of fresh organic fruit and vegetables to schools in Venice for the past three years.

   Bruno Correard of the Responsible Fisheries Alliance . (Sustainability is not limited to food coming from the land, the fish supply chain is perhaps the most vulnerable of all.)

   Paola Trionfi, National Coordinator, Public Food Projects, Italian Association for Organic Agriculture. Signora Trionfi will detail how national and regional laws have supported the development of sustainable public food services in Italy.

   Alistair Prior, Food Industry Unit, Scottish Government. Mr Prior will present a strategic overview of how Scotland has become a leader in the development of food policies which promote both health, the local food economy and the environment.
